Northwest Territories Immigration Nominee Program – Entrepreneur Stream

The Northwest Territories Immigration Nominee Program (NWTINP) Entrepreneur Stream provides experienced entrepreneurs the opportunity to establish or acquire a business in the Northwest Territories (NWT) while working toward permanent residency in Canada.

Application Process

  1. Self-Evaluation – Applicants must first assess their eligibility.
  2. Submission & Review – Eligible candidates submit their application for territorial review.

The program welcomes businesses across all sectors but prioritizes proposals that:

  • Introduce new products or services to the NWT, or
  • Deliver significant economic benefits to the region.

Both new startups and existing business acquisitions are eligible, provided they demonstrate clear value for the territory.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Investment Requirement – A minimum equity investment (amount varies by business location).
  • Net Worth – A verifiable personal net worth (threshold depends on business location).
  • Trust Account Deposit – A refundable deposit held in trust, released upon fulfilling the Business Performance Agreement (BPA).
  • Regional Knowledge – A strong understanding of the NWT’s economy and market.
  • Communication Skills – Proficiency in English or French.
  • Relevant Experience & Education – Demonstrated ability to execute the proposed business plan.

Nomination Process

  • If the Assistant Deputy Minister approves the business plan, the applicant may receive a temporary work permit to establish the business under the BPA.
  • After meeting the BPA terms, the applicant becomes eligible for a provincial nomination to apply for permanent residency through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Federal Government Considerations

A nomination from the NWT does not guarantee permanent residency. IRCC conducts final checks, including:

  • Admissibility (criminal, medical, or security concerns).
  • Compliance with the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

This program enables entrepreneurs to drive economic growth in the Northwest Territories while securing their future in Canada.
